Churches

There are a lot of small churches in Dumfries. Many of them face closure as congregations dwindle. I undertook a project to photograph some of these churches and, along with a fellow photographer Margaret Elliot, we mounted an exhibition to raise funds for local people caring for Ukrainian refugees.

Normally photographs of churches accentuate the spectacle and grandeur of the buildings. These small churches don’t have vaulted arches and grand altars, but they do have a quiet charm which I was keen to capture. I thought it would be interesting to capture wide views of the interiors of the churches and create images which no-one would normally see. Unseen, but familiar views from the pews.
