New Year, new style

When I visited New York last year, I was keen to photograph the Flat Iron Building. Unfortunately, due to renovation works, that wasn’t possible.  Luckily, a building off Wall Street provided a mini-substitute.

While driving through Glasgow last month I spotted a building of a similar style.  A bit of research revealed that these triangular buildings, built on the intersection of two roads, are referred to as ‘Gushet’ buildings. Depending on your source, ‘Gushet’ refers to either a river or a piece of armour. I have found six of these buildings in Glasgow so far. They seem to be either pubs or banks. Different forms of consumer investment I suppose.

With a little of their original colour added back, these Gushet buildings take on a slightly magical quality. I’ve been told about some in Aberdeen which will have a very different colour. I’ll be on the look out for more in other cities.
