For my first blog I want to talk about tackling a subject which I am not familiar with.
Some background first. I’ve been following an American YouTuber, Nick Carver. Based in Orange County, California, he uses a panoramic film camera to take superb landscape photographs. In one of his videos he outlines the key elements of a successful panorama picture. I decided to give it a go.
The weather and the geography in California are a little different from those we experience in Dumfries. The colours here are more ‘earthy’ with a palette of predominantly brown and green, the light is more subdued and the vistas are more contained, with rolling landscapes of fields and hills.
I set out with my Sony A7R3 and a Samyang tilt shift lens on an overcast autumn day. So not quite Orange County. The tilt shift lens is used in architectural photography to keep verticals straight, but it’s also ideal for panoramas. The rain came and went, and I drove around looking for a scene that might work and which would satisfy Nick Carver’s criteria.
I didn’t take anything remarkable, but the process of looking at my local area through a different lens was great fun and gave me ideas to try when the sun comes out.
